Colorful History of the Pass  & Things to Do Nearby

UPTOP'S HISTORY:
For centuries, different Native American tribes crossed this Pass to hunt game and gather medicinal herbs. In 1877, they were followed by the D&RG narrow gauge railroad. At an altitude of 9382', Uptop became the highest railway pass in the world -- where for 22 years, steam locomotives could refuel with water at the Depot (now on the National Historial Register). When the tracks were torn up in 1899, a logging community of over 100 people was established on the Pass to cut 'pit props' for use in the many local mines...and they built the Chapel and the School House. Then came the automobile era -- with growing numbers of adventuresome tourists driving the Pass to visit the Tavern and Dance Hall.  Today, you can once again visit these historic buildings.
